BIET'S FIRST PASSPORT

Posted on: Thursday

Well we've finally done it- we applied for baby girl's first passport! I've been meaning to head to the big marble midtown post office for months now to turn in the application, and finally got around to it the other day.  Since both parents have to present in order to obtain a US passport, we made a family day of it: bagels and cream cheese on the train, a stop at the passport photo studio (I love her beaming little six-toothed grin!), and lunch and dessert afterwards. It was really nice, but man oh man is midtown exhausting.

We are planning to head down to Argentina for a few weeks in September for Gaby's birthday and I am beyond excited (as is Gaby- he hasn't visited his birth place in quite a few years).  Our Israeli family will be meeting up with us in Buenos Aires, and it will be the first time in over 30 years that Gaby and his sister will be able to walk their childhood streets together.  Its going to be beautiful.  I can't wait.

And when we get back I'll have to take little Biet to the Argentinean consulate to get her Argentinean passport.. lucky girl gets dual citizenship! If anyone has any travel/neighborhood/to-do advice please do share! thanks! xx

  1. I have a post about traveling with littles if you care to take a look: http://wokabout.net/2012/02/06/the-travelling-familys-10-travelling-essentials-you-didnt-know-you-needed/

I would also add to that list, take fermented cod liver oil (its awesome for your immune system) and get started on the probiotics. You can get powdered children's probiotics. If you start now and Biet gets sick while away, just increase your doses gradually. You and Gaby can also take them. As for the plane, don't stress. Take plenty of snacks and don't bring obnoxiously noisy toys (you won't win popularity points with the other passengers). I'm not one for excessive tv watching but we do stock up on episodes of the Wiggles and Dora the Explorer for long flights/car trips -- anything to keep you sane.

I'm so happy you're traveling with Biet! This is going to be an awesome experience for you all. Our little man had been around the world and lived in China all before his first birthday. I'm only sorry that baby #2 won't have the same opportunity (we are in the middle of applying for her daddy's permanent residency here in Australia so can't leave until that's finalised). Our babies are dual too -- Australian/American. Isn't it wonderful?!

    1. Thank you for the probiotic tips! I used to take them every day.. I really should get back to that! And, yes, dual citizenship is wonderful. I'm only a little jealous to be the only one in my family to have only American citizenship. ;)

  2. We just got Iris' passport a few months back! It was a hysterical experience. I was first trimester sick with our second, so poor Trevor had to get the head shots alone...and Iris is not skilled in sitting still! And it is CRAZY getting both parents to the post office when the post office is actually open. But we did it! And I ADORE Iris' first passport. It's the cutest picture of her and a lovely sign that she'll be a world traveler right along with us.

Your trip sounds so fun! What a thing to look forward to!

  4. Make sure you save the passport or make a copy because it makes a great little addition to a collage for a Sweet 16 or Graduation. Always thinking ahead!

  5. We have traveled now with our little ones 2 times. They are less than a year apart {read: 6 months and 18 months}. I agree with Rachel, we are not ones for much tv/ movies. In the plane, however, whatever you can do to keep them entertained! Also, when we sit down, we make a joke to our neighbors... "we don't know how this is going to go down, if it gets bad, I'll buy you a cocktail". It breaks the ice and lets them know that you are doing your best.
If you have a laptop of an iPad or something like that where you can watch movies, etc. My toddler LOVES photobooth on the mac. And TONS of snacks. We like to sit in the back of the plane for several reasons:
    1. It's super loud, our babes usually pass out when they get going.
    2. You are right by the flight attendants station, anything you might need is right there, including the bathroom. And btw, if and when you change her diaper in the bathroom, just laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation.
    3. Not as many people will bump into you if you are sittting back there.

Don't take a careseat on the plane. Most likely she won't want to sit in it and it's just one more thing that you will have to carry iwth you. Take a stroller onto the plane with you. THey will let you gate check it and it doesn't count as a carry one. Good luck!!
